Around Here

By Leo Coughlin

Nobody asked me, but –

. . . Why are ballots being printed in a foreign language in parts of this country? Only citizens can vote, right? And to pass the citizenship test one must know English. So why foreign language ballots? I don’t get it.

. . . A popular long-time figure at the Diagnostic Clinic had big turn out to greet her at a surprise party staged by her daughter, Paulee Day, a very successful lawyer, early in November, marking a significant birthday for her. Adrienne, as she is known to one and all, is a beloved fixture at the clinic.

. . . Frankly, I think the United States should become exclusive. We’re letting in every Tom, Dick and Harry, and one day we will reap the whirlwind.

. . . Take it from me, I was there (at least part of the time). We are having a re-run of the Vietnam days in the White House press room. Scott McClellan is stonewalling and undergoing the same questioning as did Ron Ziegler, Richard Nixon’s press guy. Great feeling of deja vu.

. . . Whatever became of Myra Chandler?

. . . Belleair Beach has taken on the patina of efficiency – Reid Silverboard, has the operation running smoothly, and Mayor Rudy Davis deftly manages the City Council in a professional way.

. . . Flitting in the shadows behind the scenes is a former politico who is bending all force and strength to influence the outcome of a key election battle shaping up in Largo. In the view of those involved, much is at stake.

. . . Lookalikes – Rod Irwin, Clearwater assistant city manager, and Jason Robards, late star of stage and screen.

. . . Why was Muhammad Ali (ne Cassius Clay) awarded the Medal of Freedom? This guy refused to serve in the 1960s when called by his country. This makes all awards meaningless and insults every man and woman who did serve.

. . . Downtown Main Street folks have a pleasant interlude every Wednesday morning (early) at a little breakfast place on West Bay – no heavy business, just trading notes and updating. Drop by, it’s all about making Largo better.

. . . What kind of perversion is it when a man who ducked service in the Vietnam War because he said he “had other priorities” is the man who decorates the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Veterans Day. Disgusting!

. . . I agree with Thomas Carlyle that all work is honorable, but why is a self-proclaimed big shot now retired from a state agency working as a rent a cop?

. . . "People who think that they don't owe anything to anybody should read David McCullough's outstanding new book '1776,' to see what hell other people went through to create the freedom that we enjoy and abuse today." — Thomas Sowell. If you don’t know who Thomas Sowell is, you should. One of the most brilliant men of our time.

. . . As the world turns – the spouse of Mayor Bob Jackson’s announced opponent in March was a hefty contributor to the mayor’s campaign fund in the past. “Why does she want to commit political suicide?” one observer offered.

. . . From Gregory Kane, African-American columnist in The Sun (Baltimore) – “Rest in peace, Rosa Parks. Here's hoping that blacks of tomorrow don’t fail you as woefully as some of the blacks of today.”

. . . What’s going on in the school department? You’d think there would be plenty to do just educating the moppets and making sure they didn’t killed on the buses. But now, it turns up, someone used the innocuous words “cotton pickin’” and a federal case is being made out of it. Unnecessary pain is being inflicted on a good person. What patent nonsense.

. . . From my friend who finds many things amusing – “You’re an extreme redneck when: Your wife’s hairdo was once ruined by a ceiling fan.” Hey, some rednecks are my best friends.

. . . The low state of the language – imply and infer constantly misused. Imply is when the other guy says something and you infer a meaning from it.

. . .Asians are proud as punch and no wonder. Tiger Woods, who may wind up as the greatest golfer of all time, is wrapping up another superb year. He is not only a great competitor, but a great gentleman.

. . . Query and response – to Dan S., IRB – No, that person is not a guy in female garb, but is actually a woman. To PEC, Clearwater – The official you refer to has had many narrow escapes as a result of poor judgment. Fortunately, there is a friend who supplies protection.
