The Belleair Garden Club held its annual Junk 'N Jewel Sale on Friday January 20 and Saturday January 21. The club rents tables to members and other vendors who sell items such as jewelry, vintage clothing, furniture, linens, plants and ceramics. The proceeds from the two-day event help the club pay for rising overhead costs such as their utilities, maintenance, and insurance.
One of the most popular tables at the sale is the baked goods table featuring jams, breads and other yummy sweets made by Garden Club members. Club member Jean Searson was kind enough to share her recipe; a favorite of Junk 'N Jewel Sale attendees:
Jean Searson's Chocolate Brickle
40 saltine crackers
1/2 pound of butter or margarine
1 cup brown sugar
12 ounces of chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place saltine crackers on a foil lined cookie sheet. Heat the butter and brown sugar together stirring until well blended (at least 5 minutes.) Pour over crackers and bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over crackers and spread evenly. Refrigerate for four hours and then break apart.
The Belleair Garden Club's next fundraising event will be a fashion show on Friday, April 7 at the Belleair Country Club. Fashions shown will be from Steinmart department store, located in downtown Clearwater. The cost of the luncheon and show is $30 per person. A field trip to tour Tropiflora nursery in Sarasota is also planned for Wednesday, February 1. The cost for the outing is $27, and lunch is included in this day long event. The club's general meetings are held, at noon, on the first Wednesday of each month and non-member guests are always welcome. For more information, call 581-8313.
