Hansel And Gretel Opera To Be Presented In Largo

The Largo Cultural Center is proud to present two special performances of the Opera "Hansel and Gretel" in conjunction with the Orlando Opera Company and the Pinellas Opera League on Thursday, May 25.

The first performance at 1 p.m. is given free for 300 local children from Largo's Summer Camp Program. The city is transporting them to the Largo Cultural Center and providing supervision. The Largo Cultural Center is donating the hall and the Pinellas Opera League is underwriting the cost of the Orlando Opera. This performance is for the children ONLY from the camps.

The second performance will be at 7:30 p.m. and open to the public. At the evening performance ONLY, the singers sponsored by the Pinellas Opera League will perform Broadway hits. There will be an intermission and then "Hansel and Gretel" will be performed. The opera is a special reduced version of the one done especially for children.

On April 6 auditions were held at the Largo Cultural Center where 30 children had been chosen by the schools to audition. Seven boys and seven girls were given roles of gingerbread boys and angels. They will be used in the opera at both performances. Costumes will be provided by the Orlando Opera.

An edible gingerbread house will be at the evening performance, only, for all to partake in after the show is over.

Tickets in the evening are $7 for adults, $5 for children and $20 for a family of four. The Largo Cultural Center is located at 105 Center Park Drive in the heart of Largo Cultural Park. For additional information call the center at 587-6793.
