
TAMPA, Fla. (September 30, 2006) - The University of South Florida men's soccer team (5-4-2, 3-2-2 BIG EAST) suffered it second-straight BIG EAST loss with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-6-0, 3-4-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the USF Soccer Stadium.
Despite out-shooting Rutgers, 19-12 (7-4 on goal), an early goal by RU's Michael Crowley proved to be the difference as the Bulls fell to 3-2-2 in conference action. Sophomore Kevon Neaves led all Bulls with five shots, forcing goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel to make three of his seven total saves on the night. Forward Jordan Seabrook created two good chances, nearly tying the game twice on breakaways. However, Van Oekel saved both opportunities to secure the shutout. Junior Rodrigo Hidalgo forced two more saves on the night, taking a total of three shots versus the Scarlet Knights.
Crowley's goal came in the 15th minute, giving the Scarlet Knights an early 1-0 lead. After receiving a drop pass from teammate Kevin O'Connor, Crowley turned just inside the 18-yard box and took a low driving shot towards the far post. USF goalkeeper Dane Brenner was unable to make the diving save as Rutgers took the one-goal lead. The goal was the first of the season for Crowley. O'Connor was credited with his first assist of the year.
It is the first time in BIG EAST play that USF has fell in back-to-back contests.
USF will host Stetson on Thursday, Oct. 12 at the USF Soccer Stadium. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
