Buddy Walk Promotes Awareness of Down Syndrome

Photos/Text by Sandy Fahy

(from left) Event organizer Melissa Tremblay, Allison Tremblay, Yvonne Buchanan, Megan Buchanan and Carol Buchanan are ready for the Third Annual Tampa Bay Area Buddy Walk to begin at Largo Central Park on October 14. The one-mile walk to promote acceptance and awareness of people with Down Syndrome was sponsored by Up With Downs of Pinellas and the City of Largo. Participants received a Buddy Walk t-shirt and a free lunch. Games, arts and crafts, clowns, balloon art, face painting, musical entertainment and a Moonwalk were also part of the fun.

After picking up their t-shirts and event materials at the registration table, (front l-r) Lindsey Petrak, Elizabeth Petrak, Savannah Pate, Devin Pate, (back l-r) Dolores Petrak, Durwood Pate and Rose Taylor gather for a photo prior to the start of Saturday's Third Annual Tampa Bay Area Buddy Walk at Largo Central Park. Dolores Petrak advised all were family members who had come to show their support for people with Down syndrome. Their cousin's baby, now over a year old, was born with the disorder, she said.
