Westra Construction expects to complete Phase I work on the Beach Walk project by the end of this month. Fifth Street will open Friday, May 4. This means that the intersection of Hamden Drive is open so traffic can continue north on Hamden to Devon. Work north of Devon will be complete by May 11.
Drainage work to increase the size of the pipe that penetrates the seawall is underway on Fifth and Third streets. Westra Construction will pave the eastbound side of South Gulfview Boulevard from Hamden Drive to the Hess Station on May 17 and 18, after completing utility work there. After that, re-striping, landscaping, tree grates, signage and driveway connections will occur, resulting in final traffic patterns in place by May 31.
Nelson Construction continues Phase II work and expects to reopen the Pier 60 parking lot by the end of this month. City workers are installing a temporary traffic signal at the Pier 60 parking lot to be done by May 11. The light will be a cautionary flashing light until the Pier 60 parking lot reopens, at which time it will become a fully operational signal. Nelson Construction performed water, sewer, and reclaimed water work along the north end of Coronado and in the Pier 60 lot so that the reclaimed water system is in service. Some water main work is almost complete and ready to place into service.
Nelson began pouring concrete for a new seatwall, which will provide a seating area for beachgoers and will keep sand from blowing onto the new promenade. A chain link fence is in place around the perimeter of the area where demolition work will occur.
The next Hard Hat Meeting is 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, at Frenchy's South Beach Café, 351 South Gulfview Blvd.
The targeted completion date for the Beach Walk project is before Super Bowl 2009. Visit www.myclearwater.com/beachwalk or call 562-4681 for more information.
