Youngsters from 4-H clubs all over the state gathered at Austin Carey Memorial Forest not long ago to compete in the State 4-H Forest Ecology Contest. Each participant was tested at six different stations to determine his/her knowledge in the areas of tree and plant identification, forest insects and diseases, map and compass, forest wildlife and forest ecology. As it turned out, all of the winners from Pinellas County are members of the Gulf Coast 4-H Club. Katelyn Garner took first place, Kailey White third place, in the Junior Individual division. In the Intermediate Individual division, Matthew Garner finished second. Katelyn and Kailey teamed up with Tricia Gellatly and Daniella Vacek-Best to win first place for Junior Teams. The Intermediate Team composed of Matthew, Hayden Anderson, Ashley Bently and Victoria Hynes took third place. Kudos to all! ...
