On Saturday, October 6, members of the Clearwater flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary participated in the Ocean Conservancy's 22nd Annual International Coastal Cleanup organized locally by Keep Pinellas Beautiful. Over 200 lbs. of garbage was collected from two spoil islands in the Intracoastal Waterway west of downtown Clearwater and west of Belleair, that are popular with boaters. While there were plenty of beverage cans, bottles and cigarette butts, there was a noticeably scarce amount of fishing line, plastic bags, and other items harmful to birds and animals. It is very rewarding to see local boaters doing their part to save marine wildlife.
