Fire Prevention Week 2007: Practice Your Escape Plan

Clearwater Firefighters Host 2nd Annual Open House

On Saturday, October 13th, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Clearwater firefighters will address the dangers of home fires and teach citizens how to plan and practice escape from a home should a fire occur. Clearwater Fire & Rescue's Open House event is part of 2007 Fire Prevention Week, which runs October 7th - 13th.

All eight Clearwater Fire Stations will have various displays and demonstrations, station tours, and activities for the kids. Some will offer short truck rides. At Station 50 (2681 Countryside Blvd.) the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Street Team will attend with an inflatable hitting and pitching tent and special giveaways.

Sometimes there are only seconds to get out if a fire occurs, but having an escape plan and practicing it increases the chances of survival. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than three thousand people died in 2005 in home fires. That's an average of eight people every day. It's not only enough to have an escape plan, but to practice it so everyone in the house knows what to do.
