$500,000 for Ft. De Soto Approved

With 2.7 million visitors a year, Ft. De Soto Park continues to be a popular destination. At the center of the beautiful beaches is the fort, built at the turn of the century. The original drainage system for the top of the fort has collapsed, creating water damage so severe that the walls of the fort are literally dissolving. The commission approved an agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to accept a $500,000 grant to go toward the engineering study and replacement of the collapsed drainage system. The county will add $125,000 from its capitol improvement program to complete the job. The project will likely require sections of the fort to be closed to the public during construction.
