Qualifying Time Nears End With Only 2 Candidates for 3 Seats

by Renee Burrell

Belleair Beach - As of this writing Wednesday only two Belleair Beach residents, David Dumville and Mitch Krach have thrown in their hats for three council seats available in the municipal elections scheduled for March 11.

The qualification period began December 14 and ends noon tomorrow.

If no other candidates come forth, the city council will appoint the third council member.

The upcoming vacant seats are currently held by council members Mary Schoonover, Richard Crowl, and Krach. Schoonover and Crowl were sworn in as council members in 2006 along with Jeffrey Coulson, who resigned. Krach was put in Coulsen's seat by council appointment May 7, 2007 to serve until the terms end in March.

At this point, Krach is the only incumbent seeking a seat. Prior to his appointment, Krach served the city as the former chairman of the city code enforcement board.

Dumville is a telecommunications engineer and consultant for Electronic Data Systems, headquartered in Plano, Texas.

Per the city charter, to qualify to serve on the council, applicants must have lived in and been registered voters in Belleair Beach for at least six months prior to applying for appointment. If chosen to serve, they must remain a permanent resident during their term of office.

The City Council is composed of a Mayor and six (6) council members who are elected at large on a non-partisan basis.
