Rezoning of the Shoppes on Sand Key

I am a resident of Sand Key and homeowner at the Meridian on Sand Key. The City of Clearwater Community Development Board will consider the application for rezoning filed by D. A. Bennett, the owner of the Shoppes of Sand Key requesting a change in zoning to "T" tourism which would permit the destruction of the Shoppes on Sand Key and construction of a hotel up to ten stories. There is no other retail commercial located on the island to serve the neighborhood. In addition, the impact on the community will change the nature from predominantly residential to tourist.

The residents have formed SOS, Save our Shoppes on Sand Key (SOS) to oppose the zoning application. In addition, legal counsel, Alan S. Zimmit, has been retained by the Meridian, Grande, Landmark, Crescent Beach Club, Lighthouse Towers, South Beach 1 and 2 and Sand Key Civic Association to represent the residents of the island. Thousands of petitions have been circulated and will be presented to the Community Development Board by Chairperson of SOS, Mary Reinhardt. Residents will be present to voice their concerns, objections and opinions regarding the rezoning.
