Festival Features Art and Flowers

World renowned artist Patrick Gaughan was among the sponsors of this year's Festival of Arts at the Largo Community Center. The third annual art and floral competition and show on February 22-23 featured over 40 paintings and 25 floral designs. Several of Gaughan's paintings were up for bid in the silent auction held in conjunction with the event. Gaughan also conducted art seminars at the center both days.

Judge for the fine art competition was Toni Hutfilz, an instructor at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center and art teacher in Costa Rica. Charlotte De Gennaro was awarded first place. Nancy Senovich took second place and Susan Kubes, third place. Honorable mention went to Gloria Page.

In the creative floral design division, the winners were Jill Anderson, first place; P. Thompson, second place; and Inger Haige, third place. Carol Lucia received honorable mention.

Winners in the "painting inspired floral design" category were as follows: first place - floral arrangement by Carol Lucia, painting by Roger Asselin; second place - floral arrangement by Carol Brennan, painting by Peter Gallagher; third place - floral arrangement by Jan Ankerberg, painting by Susan Kubes. Receiving an honorable mention ribbon were the floral arrangement by Gail Carlson and accompanying painting by Phyllis Murphy. Cash prizes and ribbons were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Those attending also had the opportunity to learn about the art of Japanese flower arranging in the seminar conducted by Ikenobo Ikebana expert Muriel Scrivner. Adults and seniors are invited to sign up for her classes at the Largo Community Center. Demonstrations were also slated by Sue Hess and Toni Young.

Other sponsors of the event were the Largo Community Center Senior Advisory Board, Volunteer Corps Advisory Board, Pinecrest Place and the Gen. Robert H. Gaughan Foundation. Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch.
