Recs and ReadsBy Anne McKay GarrisThey're registering for summer camp at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center? You're kidding! Wasn't Christmas just last week? Well, maybe a couple of weeks ago. Maybe I'm saying Summer Camp at the Rec Center is just as much fun as Christmas. Well, Santa Claus doesn't come, unless some of those folks at the Rec Center come up with one of those "Christmas in July" events I keep hearing about. When JP, the camp director, started describing the activities at Summer Camp I wanted to ask if umpteen year-old grandmothers -- make that great grandmothers -- can participate. He said, "not unless you bring cookies." Just joking! He didn't say it, but I'll bet he was thinking it. Maybe they'd let me teach jump rope. Jump rope? That's where two people hold a long rope and . . . well, you have to be there. Where were we? Oh, camp activities include a bunch of swimming adventures, in the pool, and in the Gulf as well as games to play and crafts to create. Summer camp is from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, from June 9 to August 15, for young folks from "starting kindergarten in the fall" to "starting sixth grade in the fall." Registration for Summer Camp began this week and capacity is limited so you might want to check in to it. Incidentally, a friend of mine was asking where they could have a party in a nice facility with windows overlooking the water. I thought everyone knew by now that the Beach Recreation Center can be rented for events. The social hall holds 217 guests "on the hoof" and about 180 if they want to sit around tables. There's no charge for guests wandering out on to the waterside deck to enjoy the evening during the party. Now that it's open, the Clearwater Beach Aquatic Center (that's really a swimming pool and lots of neat play equipment, and pool furniture, plus a bath house) can also be rented for parties. Who can fail to enjoy a party when there's always the possibility that someone will push someone into the pool? Oh, excuse me, that's against the rules. But pool parties are fun anyway and you don't have to figure how to get the guys to join the gals in playing Charades .... or some such. For camp registration, rental of the Center or the Pool, call 462-6020, or 462-6138. Meantime, the Friends of the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center/ Library will be meeting this week. If you have any suggestions for summer programs at either facility, please call Friends chairman Pat Power at 446-0929.
