Suncoast Sierra Club of Pinellas County Meeting News
The Suncoast Sierra Club of Pinellas County meets the third Thursday of each month at Moccasin Lake Park in Clearwater, off of Drew Street and Hwy. 19. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. and feature a speaker on an Environmental topic and social time. The public is welcome and further information may be obtained by calling Joyce at 727-526-5065.
Meeting topics scheduled:
April 17 - CHANGE OF LOCATION - Earth Day Celebration with the City of Gulfport at the Catheriine Hickman Theater at 5501 27th Ave South in Gulfport. The film, Feel the Heat, about Florida's coming climate crisis will be shown at 7 p.m. Public is invited, there is no cost. Call for more information.
May 15 - Dave Kantz, Conservation Chair of the St. Petersburg Audubon Society, presents photos and a talk about local Beach Nesting Birds Season. This includes black skimmers, least terns, plovers, laughing gulls and pelicans.
June 19 - "Life in a Paradise - a Caladesi Retrospective," will be presented by the granddaughter of Myrtle Scharrer Betz (1895-1992). Myrtle was born and raised in Caladesi pioneer life on her family's 156 acre homestead on Caladesi Island. Her Swiss immigrant father was an outgoing and capable man who loved the freedom, sustainability and beauty of the Florida barrier Island. Myrtle's Irish immigrant mother, Catherine, instilled wonder for shells and plants, and imparted a talent for cooking. The public is invited to attend and hear Myrtle's granddaughter, Terry Fortner, share Caladesi Memories, a talk accompanied by projected images of the authentic homestead.
