CLEARWATER - Four local sorority women, all attending college in-state, are the recipients of this year's scholarship awards presented by the Clearwater Alumnae Panhellenic Association. Megan Pendleton, Melissa Hodge, Sarah Rust and Tracey Frett were selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, participation in sorority and campus activities, personal goals, initiative and financial need. Presentation of the scholarships took place May 10 at the organization's annual spring brunch at Carlouel Yacht Club.

Pendleton and Hodge are students at Florida State University, where they are members of Delta Gamma sorority. Rust is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at the University of Florida. Frett is enrolled at the Florida Institute of Technology. Her sorority is Gamma Phi Beta.

Also on the agenda that day was installation of officers for 2008-2009. Outgoing president Joyce Metcalf of Chi Omega turned the gavel over to Kim Swartzel of Delta Delta Delta. Joining Swartzell on the board are Claudia Leonardi of Delta Gamma, vice president; Lynn Lawton of Kappa Alpha Theta, treasurer; Pat Moriarty of Pi Beta Phi, recording secretary; and Christi Regan of Kappa Delta, corresponding secretary.

Molly Hancock of Zeta Tau Alpha received the 2007-2008 Panhellenic Achievement Award, which was presented by last year's winner, Nancy Cerwin of Alpha Sigma Alpha. The award is given annually in recognition of outstanding volunteerism in both the community and Panhellenic.

Host sororities for the spring brunch were Alpha Sigma Alpha, Delta Delta Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Zeta Tau Alpha. Over 400 college alumnae representing 18 national sororities belong to Clearwater Alumnae Panhellenic, which has been affiliated with the National Panhellenic Conference since 1963. The local organization has been awarding scholarships annually since 1975. Betty O'Shea of Sigma Kappa, Mary-Ann Janssen of Kappa Alpha Theta, Gloria Hollingsworth of Alpha Chi Omega and Joyce Metcalf of Chi Omega served on this year's scholarship committee.
