Taller Buildings, More Density at the Beach in Clearwater

By Bill Lopez

CLEARWATER - Passing by a vote of 5-0, amendments to the Beach-By-Design guidelines at last week's Clearwater Council meeting would allow for a modest increase in the height of beach-front buildings and more density for those structures.

The maximum height of buildings may be increased to 150 feet if additional density is allocated to the development via the Hotel Density Reserve, but only for those properties located between South Gulfview Boulevard and the Gulf of Mexico or located on the west side of Coronado Drive.

The amendments approved by the Council would change Subsection C to allow for 75 percent of the theoretical maximum building envelope to be occupied by a building for those hotels on less then 2.0 acres that have been allocated additional density.

The vote is the first of two with the next reading to come in July for Ordinance 7967-08.
