AmeriCorps Members Do A Coastal Cleanup In North Clearwater Beach

AmeriCorps Clearwater members did a costal cleanup in north Clearwater Beach, (Between Rockaway Grill and Caladesi Island) ?on Friday, September 5, after the Clearwater Police Department noted an abundance of trash in that area.  This is the AmeriCorps second coastal cleanup this year.  In February, they collected 235 pounds of trash along the Courtney Campbell Causeway.

AmeriCorps is commonly referred to as the "domestic Peace Corps," it gives citizens the opportunity to engage in a year of full-time community service.  AmeriCorps Clearwater is a public safety program that enables members to work hand-in-hand with the Clearwater Police Department to help prevent and reduce crime and increase public safety.

AmeriCorps members address non-violent public safety issues, allowing police officers to address more serious and criminal incidents.  In 2008, AmeriCorps has saved 7,520 hours of valuable police officer time and saved the department over $190,000.

AmeriCorps Clearwater is currently recruiting for 2009.  Anyone interested in applying should contact Rebecca Davis, AmeriCorps Coordinator at 727-562-4142.
