Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

Book Talks, Gardening Advice and a Writers' Support Group are on the Beach Library calendar, beginning in October.

On the first Wednesday of the month (starting October 1) a writers' support group will be led by Grannie Annie Garris. (That's my alter ego!) Although we will hopefully learn a lot, the major purpose of the group is mutual encouragement in our writing efforts. Anyone who wants to write is invited to join. The meetings will be from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Much of the time will be spent in helping participants improve their writing skills. The size of the room limits the group to ten people and it will be first come first served. The initial session will be six months. Sign up sheets are available at the Beach Library desk.

Our Branch Manager, Linda Hamrell, will give a series of Book Talks on the second Wednesday of each month, beginning on October 8. Linda will feature interesting books from the recent past. The first will be on the "vivid characters created by novelist Nancy Thayer."

And, on the first Thursday of each month, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. you can learn about growing things in Florida in sessions led by some of the Master Gardeners of the Pinellas County Extension Services. On October 2, the topic will be; Learn how to make your yard the best it can be as you save time and money and protect Florida's environment.

Volunteers are still needed to help the Librarian. It's a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
