Obama and McCain - The Confections of Elections

By Carolyn Cormey

Just when you think that this election year cannot get any uglier . . . it does. Now the biggest “suppression of the right to vote” is canceling the impact of your vote and mine! Mickey Mouse, Mickey Mantle, Mickey Spillane, dead people and felons are registered voters, and THEIR votes are canceling OUR votes! Hmmmm. Does anyone smell ACORNS roasting over the fire of fraud, once again? For several election cycles, we have been reading about those nuts from ACORN (Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now) that continue to register the “Mickey Mouses” at each election but promised investigations fizzle out after the election turmoil dies down AND ELECTION AFTER ELECTION, NOTHING IS DONE TO STOP THIS!

Senator Obama’s main experience for becoming our President is listed as “Community Organizer!” There has been an ongoing debate on whether he was or was not a Community Organizer for ACORN. At first there was a complete denial but now, a “sorta” admission that there was an Obama-ACORN connection, perhaps as a Community Organizer Trainer and/or as an Attorney working with ACORN in getting banks to lend to low income borrowers.

As the silent majority, in the past we have always allowed ourselves to be bullied by Special Interest Groups who attack us and accuse us of suppressing the votes of the elderly, the poor, the homeless, the minorities and illegal aliens. It is now obvious that the votes that are really being suppressed ARE YOURS AND MINE!

Things have got to change. In many states, illegal aliens can get drivers licenses, which Obama favors and McCain does not. In these states and others, those getting driver’s licenses are automatically registered to vote by simply stating that they are citizens or providing the most minimal documentation, something as simple as a utility bill. In other states, National Photo IDs are required. Senator Obama is against a National Photo ID and states that the US Department of Justice should challenge any state with discriminatory Photo ID requirements. McCain supports States that require photo IDs. .

Obama and McCain’s Health Care Programs:

You can go to www.Barackobama.com and www.Johnmccain.com and spend a lot of time, reading and re-reading each of their Health Care programs, but like me – end up with more questions than answers. You will really like Obama’s plan, if you want a complete “candy store” list that “guarantees, cheaper, better health care for everyone (including the 45 million uninsured Americans), regardless of ability to pay insurance premiums. In Obama’s Health Plan, billions will be immediately invested in moving all (each of our) medical records into broad-based electronic health information systems!! His plan grows government that will be heavily involved in setting standards, regulating and monitoring our health care, along with setting allowable health care provider costs and health care standards, (who gets care for what?).

McCain – does not want government to absorb and control health care AND points to the fact that government has been running Medicare that is in bad financial shape. His health care proposals involve motivating private sector solutions, including portability and the sale of health insurance across state lines to promote competition with lower premiums. He does this with proposals for $5,000 tax credits for families to choose their own insurance companies and coverage alternatives. The tax credits are paid by the government to the insurance company as premiums. He supports Federal re-imbursement programs for Emergency Care facilities and supplement programs for those who cannot afford or get medical insurance.

Supreme Court Appointments and Abortion

At each Presidential Election AND whenever there is a Supreme Court nomination, the issue of Roe vs. Wade is dusted off and brought out. Though both Obama and McCain both earnestly state that there will not be an “abortion litmus test” for any Supreme Court Candidate they consider, this is simply election blather from both of them.

Obama will NEVER choose a Candidate for Supreme Court Justice who has ever indicated in a recorded ruling or personal statement, any position limiting a woman’s choice to abort, at any time in her pregnancy AND John McCain’s Candidates will have NO recorded rulings or have made no statements of record indicating that they are predisposed to favor the woman’s right to choose.

After the election – Roe vs. Wade will be returned to the back burner until it is time to drag it out again. Why really deal with this issue when it can always be counted on to make such a great election year sledge hammer to control the votes and bring out the donations from those on both sides who really care deeply about it.

Senator Obama voted against the confirmation of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito while Senator McCain voted to confirm them both. No surprise here.

Senator McCain will select Supreme Court Candidates “who understand that their role is to faithfully apply the law as written, not impose their opinions through judicial fiat (legislation from the bench by mandate).” McCain says that he sees danger in judges that impose their own view or the world view as the best policy choices for the United States. He says that creating law is the job Legislators, who are elected by the people who can then hold them responsible for the laws they create.

Senator Obama’s has stated that “empathy” will be his criterion for selecting candidates for Supreme Court Justices: “We need somebody who’s got the heart, the empathy to recognize what it’s like to be a young, teenage mom. The empathy to understand what it’s like to be poor, or African-American, or gay, or disabled, or old. And that’s the criteria by which I’m going to be selecting my judges.” Obama supports Supreme Court Justices in legislating social change from the Bench.

Style:

Senator Obama: On the plus side - is a well educated, nice looking, family man, African American AND an extremely gifted speaker in delivering speeches off a teleprompter, in front of huge crowds. He is quick on his feet and is able to connect with people on their point of reference. It is a gift or a skill and it is a good thing. On the minus side - he has only been a US Senator since January, 2005. with no executive experience at all. Throughout his political career, he has always maintained a low political profile, NEVER going against the political stream he connects to. He has some questionable associations, which he always denies, before he eventually minimizes and admits. To the Media and Political elites – he is simply “the answer!”

Senator McCain: On the plus side – we all know about his years in the prison camps of Hanoi Hilton. We also know about his 26 years of history in the US Congress and (for better or worse) all during these 26 years he has reached across the aisle to Democrats, often putting himself at odds with Republicans. He has NEVER believed in Earmarks and has NEVER asked for one, believing that each dollar of our money should be voted on, not attached to some “must pass” bill. On the minus side – Senator McCain is older, he not an accomplished scholar or an eloquent gifted speaker. While he does extremely well in answering questions in town hall settings and “one on one,” he is not a practiced speaker in reading from a teleprompter or speaking in front of a large group. While he was the Media “darling” in the 2000 election, against George Bush – in 2008, it is all about Senator Obama, in every occasion, in every perspective, all of the time.

Our Choice, Our Vote

Our US Congress (House and Senate) are currently controlled by Democrats and have been for 25% of the time that George Bush has been President. Current poll numbers show a 14% approval rating for Congress, yet the Democrats are escaping scot-free from any blame for our current economic situation AND are supposed to pick up a lot of Seats in this election. We know that a Democrat controlled Congress (60 Democrat Senators) will not support off-shore oil drilling, will support higher death tax rates, higher capital gains taxes and higher taxes on corporations who are already taxed at the second highest rates in the major industrial nations of the world.

Our best alternative is to divide the balance of power between political parties. We simply cannot believe that our struggling economy can provide free health care, free supplements to our incomes for those who struggle by putting more taxes onto the backs of entrepreneurs and corporations who provide jobs. They can simply close shop and move over seas.

Senator Obama may become our new President but if we also give him just 9 more Senators, they will run the table AND the health care, along with the list of promised perks will be piled onto the shoulders of those who will quickly flee the country, taking our jobs with them. There is really no such thing as a “free lunch.” Your vote is important!!
