Belleair Beach Council Reviews Ordinances and Infrastructure Needs

by Bill Lopez

BELLEAIR BEACH - The city council amended its building setback ordinance to accommodate the site plan for the new Belleair Beach City Hall now under construction.

The ordinance brings the front setback to 15 feet from the front lot line to the building line and 5 feet from the side and back lot lines to the building line.

The city plans to complete the new 10,000 square foot city hall building by early October 2009 at a cost of $3.3 million.

Pollution Controls - The council approved creation of a working group consisting of the City Manager, City Attorney, Community Improvement Officer and Community Services/IT Director to review and make recommendations to amend city codes, ordinances and administrative policy regarding pollution controls.

This will enable the group to implement the Construction Inspection component of the NPDES program and take action to suspend jobs that do not comply or are in violation of pollution laws without presenting detailed finding to the city council.

Harrison Avenue Bridge Repair - A special council meeting is schedule for Friday, November 21 at 3:30 p.m., to look at repair options for the Harrison Avenue Bridge.

In 2006, an engineering review of the bridge indicated that certain repairs would be needed at an estimated cost $380,000 but none was approved at that time.

While the bridge is considered safe, the prospect of repairs needs to be further clarified and a decision made as to what steps need to be taken to assure proper maintenance of the structure.

Pinellas Planning Council Representation - The council approved reappointment of Vice Mayor Jerry Knight as the city representative to the Pinellas Planning Council for a two-year term from January 2009 through December 2010.

Belleair Beach Calendar of Events - City Manager Nancy G. McCollum reminded council and attendees to be mindful of upcoming dates including: The City-wide Yard Sale Saturday, November 15, 2008, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the Mayor’s Council Christmas Luncheon, Friday, December 5, 2008, 12 Noon at the Belleview Biltmore Hotel (Call Patti at 595-4646, ext. 124 for reservations); City Council and Staff Holiday Dinner Friday, December 12, 2008, at 6 p.m. to be held at the Belleair Country Club.

The city manager also mentioned that the Barrier Island Governmental Council might consider closing either fire station 28 or 31 but that no definitive ruling has been made concerning the stations.
