Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

All you fans of Jan Karon and the Mitford stories will want to join Linda Hamrell on Wednesday, January 14, at 10 a.m., for her talk on this successful author and the characters of her books, namely Father Tim Kavanaugh.  If you have not yet met this genial pastor, Linda will surely spark your interest in reading one of Karon's books and getting to know him and his "flock" in the charming small town of Mitford.  From Cynthia, the wife of Father Tim's later years, to Uncle Billy Watson, the town character, and his wife, Rose.

And -- for the film enthusiasts among us -- Films On The Beach begins on Monday, January 12, at the Beach Recreation Center, at 10 a.m.  The winter series of movies, sponsored by the Clearwater Beach Library begins with "Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day."  There is no charge, grab a friend and go find out about Miss Pettigrew.  It sounds like a jolly movie and a good way to start the week.

Free blood pressure screenings will be offered on Wednesday, January 14, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center.  A Home Health Care agency called A Palms Staffing, offers the screenings as a community service and to acquaint members of our community with their services.

There's much to be had in the way of entertainment and exercise at our combined Library and Recreation Center.  Stop by and check it out.  It's easy to find, located east of the Mandalay Avenue tennis courts.

Now that the holidays are behind us, you might want to let the Friends of the Clearwater Beach Library and Recreation Center know what type of books you would like to be the subject of a monthly book discussion group. E-mail us at recsandreads@earthlink.net.
