Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

Attention Library Volunteers - you are badly needed at the Beach Branch Library.  With our librarian laid up with a broken arm and our winter visitors back, the library is "jumping" and volunteers are needed to help with the book sorting and shelf restocking.  Stop by and sign up for a time you can be there.  Learning how to help is easy.  Doing it is a pleasant and relaxing way to spend some useful time.

And, on Wednesday mornings, you might hear lots of laughter from the direction of the small meeting room.. That's because Wednesday is Wii for Seniors day at the Recreation Center. You can stop by the Wii room and play tennis, go bowling, hit a baseball or get involved in a boxing match.

Seriously!  The electronic whiz kids now have a program called Wii (pronounced "we") which simulates participating in all of these sports. It's available for seniors on Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m.to 1p.m. at the Beach Recreation Center. Best of all it's free! Just tell the recreation specialist at the desk that you want to play Wii and he will show you how.

Wii is good exercise for seniors because it offers the pleasure of your favorite sport without the physical effort that you may no longer be able to exert.  So, if you are missing being on the tennis courts or at the bowling alley, call a friend and come on down to the Rec Center on Wednesday morning to give Wii a try.  Or, you can do it on your own if you wish.

And, if you've always secretly wanted to box, or hit a home run, Wii will give you that opportunity also.  Better yet, if you have a friend who is limited in activity because of a disability, take them with you to play Wii.  It might give them a whole new lease on life.

(You know -- Wii is a great concept, but I wish they'd given it a better name.  Maybe we'll have a renaming contest.  Maybe we could call it Th-a, pronounced, "they" or maybe something more creative, like "Razzputin", or "Y'allcan" or something like that.)

Hey, it's easy to learn how.  The board of the Friends Of The Clearwater Beach Library And Recreation Center did it at a demonstration meeting.  If we can do it.  You can do it.  At least you will have fun trying it, and the friendly folks at the Recreation Center will make it easy for you.
