Citizens Voice Concerns Over Budgets at Largo Commission Meeting

by Bill Lopez

LARGO- At the outset of Tuesday's commission meeting two residents voiced concerns related to budgeting city funds.

Maria Bermudez emphasized the importance of the services provided by Lake Palm Community Outreach. She indicated that budget cuts at the facility would diminish the programs that are very critical to the well being of children served by the Lake Palm center. She said that many parents whose children use the facility are single parents and depend on the support provided.

Curtis Holmes indicated a strong concern that uniform cuts in budgets across all departments would not recognize critical priorities in city services. He said that some departments are more critical than others, principally the public safety departments including police, fire and environmental quality.

These service functions should be the priority concern of city government and other areas like parks and recreations that are not directly concerned with public safety should bear the burden of any necessary budget reductions in city operations, he said.
