7th Annual - Ed Wells, Jr. / Kiwanis Invitational Track & Field Meet to be Held
The Kiwanis Club of Springtime City in Clearwater is honored to host the 47th Annual Ed Wells, Jr. / Kiwanis Invitational Track and Field Meet at Clearwater High School on Tuesday, March 24, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Forty teams and over eight hundred boy and girl athletes in Pinellas county's public and private schools will participate. Over four hundred medals will be awarded to the top eight places in each of the final running and field events. Four team trophies will be presented to the first and second place boy and girl teams along with two individual trophies to the top scoring boy and girl athletes. Meet Director, Jim Ewbank, says "the athletes and coaches truly enjoy competing in our meet and receiving their medals and trophies. Everyone enjoys the competition. This will be our largest track meet we have held and really consists of two track meets - one each for the boys teams and the girls teams. It's going to be a very busy night."
Forty-eight years ago in 1962, a Springtime City Kiwanis member, Ed Wells, Jr. organized the first meet. Over these many years, Ed raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to resurface the track and maintain the track facilities and equipment. In 2005, the entire track was rebuilt to world class and Olympic standards valued at $250,000. His vision and personal commitment to accomplish this for Clearwater High School and our Clearwater community is remarkable. In 2006, Jim Ewbank became the Meet Director. Jim is a retired Clearwater High and Pinellas County school administrator and member, past President and current board of director of Springtime City Kiwanis.
Kiwanis is honored to continue Edís legacy - hosting Pinellas Countyís and Floridaís best high school invitational track meet. This event is open to the public and admission price is $5. Proceeds will go to the cost of the event and the service projects for this Kiwanis Club. To learn more about this Kiwanis club, please visit www.kiwanis.org/club/springtimecity
