Photos/text by SANDI FAHY

Florida 4-H is celebrating its 100th year in 2009. Poster art submitted for judging at the recent annual 4-H Demonstration Day at the Pinellas County Extension Service reflected that theme. Seven-year-old Jack Polmann of 4-H20, above, displays the poster which earned him a green ribbon. He is pictured with Jean Rogalsky, Pinellas 4-H youth development agent, at the awards assembly which followed the various presentations in categories such as Communication & Media Arts, Food Preparation, Clothing & Textiles, Leisure & Performing Arts, General Public Speaking, Plant Connections, Earth Sciences, Natural Resources and Animal Industry. Jack also received a green ribbon for his demonstration titled "Household Robots" in the Mechanical & Electronic Science category. Green ribbons are awarded to participants ages 5, 6 and 7 Older participants earn blue, red or white ribbons.

Reanna Stiehler of the Pony Pals 4-H Club and 4-H Ochs Club, age 7, at left, is pictured with Rose and Emily Cyr of the 4-H Ochs Club following her presentation on "How to Groom a Horse" at the annual 4-H Demonstration Day on March 21. Even though the small pony Reanna used for her talk wasn't real, it did receive a lot of attention from the younger children in attendance. Rose, 6, gave a talk on plants at the event. Both Reanna and Rose were presented green ribbons.
