Janice Chapin Buchanan Speaks to National Society of Arts and LettersAt the March 11, NSAL Luncheon meeting held at the Belleair Country Club, Janice Chapin Buchanan, Coordinator for Development and Grants at the Leepa Rattner Museum of Arts of St. Petersburg College, stated to the group that St. Petersburg College belongs to the residents of Pinellas County who support the college with their tax dollars. She went on to say that the Leepa Rattner Museum of Arts in Tarpon Springs is one of the many branches of the college supported. Ms. Buchanan's most impressive resume includes instructor at Chicago College of Fine Arts, at St. Petersburg College with research students, appointment by then Governor Bob Graham to the Board of Director at St. Petersburg College, Executive Director of St. Petersburg College Foundation, to her present position of Coordinator of Development and Grants. Her book, The Expanding Horizons, Simon and Shuster publishers, is used in universities throughout the USA. She is a pianist and a choral director studying at Rhodes College (University of Edinburgh, Scotland), earning both her Masters and her PHD in Music Education at USF (Tampa). Ms. Buchanan presented the word "art" in this way; first we are ATTRACTED to a subject be it sculpture, painting, crafts, or other media; secondly we REACT in some way to what we see - either we like it or not; next we TAKE the piece - internalizing the object with our emotions. She then presented a show and tell of art objects from around the world and through the centuries as either utilitarian pieces of art (lamps, bowls, vases, etc.) or decorative pieces (sculpted animals and birds of differing media, photographs and painted works, etc.) National Society of Arts and Letters has three luncheons with speakers during the year and an Annual Community Career Awards Luncheon in April at which time a community leader is honored as well as the winning competitors of an annual competition. This year the Awards Luncheon is to be held on April 11 at the Belleair Country Club honoring Dr. Carl Kuttler and this year's winning competitors of the NSAL Competition, Drama/Comedy.
