Beach Residents Exploring Independent MunicipalityClearwater Beach residents have organized a non-profit corporation, Islands Independence Initiative, Inc. (III) to explore the possibility of Clearwater Beach, Island Estates and Sand Key deannexing from the City of Clearwater and incorporating into an independent municipality. A significant interest in self governance has been expressed by the residents of these island communities to warrant an exploration of this and other options. The inquiry process will include a measured, thoughtful and pragmatic assessment of the possibility of deannexing from the City of Clearwater and incorporating the three island communities into the City of Clearwater Beach. Our investigation is in the very early stages so we do not have any answers and we do not even know what all of the questions are. We will focus on the legal, factual and procedural aspects of this alternative.
