Sheriff’s Office Offers Help to Deter Burglary

Taking steps to improve the security of your home does not make the residence burglary proof, but it does help to deter the criminal.

Most residential burglars are low-to-medium-skilled individuals who often use crude methods to get into your home. Their targets are generally selected at random, based on their perceived opportunity to successfully complete the crime without detection.

Inadequate security of many premises allows relatively unskilled burglars to enter a home in less than a minute.

The Crime Prevention Unit of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office provides free security surveys for private residences.

A home security survey is an on-site examination of security measures that are in place in the home to determine what level of protection is needed. The deputy conducting the survey will offer suggestions regarding external and internal lighting, security locks, exterior foliage, fencing, alarms, etc.

Some of these security measures are surprisingly simple and inexpensive. The resident will be provided a comprehensive security report and recommendation for improvements.

To schedule a home security survey, call the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit at (727) 582-5661.
