Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

Summers on Clearwater Beach don't have to be hot and hectic.  Both our library and our recreation center offer cool, comfortable get-aways for both parent and child, vacationers and condo dwellers.

Enjoy waterfront vistas from the air-conditioned comfort of one of the easy chairs at the library while your little ones entertain themselves in the children's nook nearby.  Or take a book to the pool where life guards keep an eye on the water fun of your children.

For a more lively adventure, you might want your grandchildren to initiate you into the mysteries of the games of Wii.  Right now this is possible from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Friends of the Clearwater Beach Library and Recreation Center are working on extending the hours for golf, tennis, baseball, bowling and even boxing.  You can do this, if you like, from the comfort of a chair while your young opponent dances around in the excitement of winning.  You need to be careful with the boxing, though.  It's possible to "KO" your opponent without ever touching them and has been known to have people doubled up with laughter over the amusement of boxing without ever touching each other.

You might want to reserve a date with your favorite person, to go to the movies at the library on June 8, at 10 a.m., to see the movie called the Artic Tale.  This is about a polar bear cub and walrus pup, from birth to maturity. The message is about the difficulties of these animals surviving in the midst of global warming.
