No Raises in Largo, But Employees Get to See a Slide Show

by Leo Coughlin

LARGO - There will be no raises for any Largo employee this year - tight budget and all - but Mac Craig, the city manager, has offered a special treat for employees.

All city workers got an e-mail Monday inviting them to a slide show of Craig's recent African safari.

The message that went out Monday from Jo-Ann Gulliver, Craig's secretary, said -

"If you are interested in viewing Mac's African Safari slide show it will be running continuously in the Community Room at City Hall on Thursday (today) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Just drop in at any point during that time if you wish. The full show is approximately 40 minutes."

As is well known, Largo employees are well paid, despite no raises this year. Taxpayer dollars, in a way, pay for those who will be observing the slide show.

So a break from the work day - tantamount to a fire drill in the school days of yore - is no doubt a welcome diversion.

One employee greeted the news with less than enthusiasm.

"The city manager has chosen to 'brag' about his money and abilities to spend, not to mention inviting every employee to waste 40 minutes or more of taxpayer dollars watching his vacation. What an outrage!"

The employee - source for this news tidbit - will, of course, go unidentified.
