Morton Plant Mease Volunteer Program Targets Former Nurses to Provide More Patient Comfort
CLEARWATER - Retired nurses or nurses taking a break in their career can utilize their nursing skills and provide additional comfort to hospital patients through a new volunteer program at Mease Countryside Hospital.
An informational luncheon on the volunteer nurse program will be held at noon on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Mease Countryside Hospital, 3231 McMullen Booth Road, Safety Harbor, in meeting rooms 1 and 2. To reserve a seat please call (727) 725-6290.
Participants will provide valuable assistance and support to hospital staff, patient and families by offering bedside companionship, reinforcing teaching and assisting with hygiene and feeding.
"This is an excellent opportunity for retired nurses, those who have changed careers, or who are considering returning to nursing, to maintain an active role in the field. And patients will benefit, especially on an emotional level, by having a trained medical professional giving them extra attention during their hospital stay," said Margie Harris, director of volunteer resources, Morton Plant Mease Health Care.
The program is intended to supplement the hospital's nursing staff, which already enjoys Magnet status for meeting the gold standard of nursing excellence, as awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. To be named as a Magnet facility, a hospital must complete a comprehensive process that evaluates patient care, working environment, interdisciplinary relationships and processes of the entire organization.
Participants in the volunteer nurse program will have access to the hospital's continuing education program, free nursing license renewal, and basic life support certification.
Two years of nursing experience is required to join the volunteer nurse program. An active RN or LPN license is not required however participants must have held a previous, unencumbered license.
