Skycrest Community Garden Grand Opening Planned for September 12CLEARWATER - The Skycrest Community Garden will hold a Grand Opening on Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Many city officials will be present at this ribbon cutting ceremony which will mark the official start of the planting season. Refreshments will be served. The Skycrest Community Garden is a partnership between the Skycrest Neighborhood Association, known as Skycrest Neighbors, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. St. Paul's Lutheran Church donated the use of part of their property near the intersection of Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. and Saturn Ave. for the purpose of developing a community garden. The groundbreaking was on Earth Day 2009 and since then a group of Skycrest residents has been turning the empty lot into an inviting garden space. The garden is organic and is being created with the use of many 'green' features, including rain barrels and composting bins. The Skycrest Community Garden is currently accepting plot registrations from residents of the Skycrest area. Plots will be awarded based on a lottery system. The annual lot fee of $20 will go towards garden maintenance and improvements. Residents may pick up registration forms at the opening ceremony. The Skycrest Neighborhood Association, known as Skycrest Neighbors, is a Florida non-for-profit corporation formed to serve the needs of residents and business owners in the historic Skycrest neighborhood. The area of over 1,000 homes was one of Clearwater's first residential suburbs. Skycrest Neighbors, Inc. aims to provide residents with a link to City Government, an active Neighborhood Watch and a collective voice that represents the neighborhood's interests. The group meets monthly to discuss topics of interest and impact to its neighborhood. Meetings are held the last Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2001 Rainbow Dr. For additional information visit the neighborhood website at www.skycrestnighbors.org or contact Joanna Siskin at 727-442-0096.
