Clearwater Garden Club Kicks Off a New Year

CLEARWATER - Chairmen of the Clearwater Garden Club's standing committees joined executive committee members for the first board meeting of 2009-2010 on September 4. This year's elected officers are Jean Columbo, president; Caroline Kaufmann, 1st vice president; Laura Daniel, second vice president; Alice Jarvis, treasurer; Cathy Foley, assistant treasurer; Marsha Clark, recording secretary; and Jo Roche, corresponding secretary. Standing committee chairs are Elizabeth France and Caroline Kaufmann, Area Beautification Council; Belen Brown, Awards and Exhibits; Dorothy Bornemann, Birds, Butterflies & Conservation; Jean Columbo, Alice Jarvis, Arlene Wich, Hilda Sinnett and Laura Daniel, Budget and Finance; Marsha Clark, Helen Hoskins and Elizabeth France, By-Laws and Standing Rules; ELizabeth France, Civic Beautification; Arlene Wich, Grounds and Landscape; Gladys Seney, Hospitality; Helen Hoskins and Marsha Clark, Library and Public Information; Laura Daniel and Elizabeth France, Membership; Liz Buchanan, Ways and Means.

Laura Daniel is in charge of the Holiday Luncheon on December 11. Belen Brown, Alice Jarvis, Gladys Seney, Cathy Foley and Jean Columbo will be coordinating the club's Winter Warm-Up Luncheon and Card Party scheduled on January 26. The annual standard flower show will take place March 19-20 under the direction of Belen Brown and Marion Crane.

First regular meeting of the new year will be held at Clearwater Garden Club headquarters, 405 Seminole St., on Friday, September 11. Time is 9:45 a.m. Guest speaker will be James Stevenson of the Pinellas Cooperative Extension Service, who will discuss "Sustainability in Your Own Backyard". Linda Worley from Flowers and Other Things will address members at the meeting on Friday, October 9. Topic will be "Container Gardening--Big Beauties in Small Spaces". The club's annual plant sale is set for Saturday, October 24. The November meeting on Friday, the 13th, will feature a representative of Vintage Interiors, who will provide "Tips and Tricks for Floral Displays in Stylish Rooms". A Holiday Workshop will be offered to the public on Saturday, December 12. Another special event will be the "Lasagna Night" fundraiser in February.

The club also offers "Gardening on Saturdays" for those who cannot attend meetings or other events during the week. Schedule for the fall is as follows: September 19, October 17, November 21, December 5. Time is 10 a.m. for all sessions.

Mission of the Clearwater Garden Club is "to further the education of members and the public in the fields of gardening, horticulture, botany, landscape design, artistic design, conservation of natural resources, civic beautification, garden therapy, environmental studies and nature studies."
