Clearwater Audubon Society Upcoming Events for October
10/5, Monday, 7:30pm - Clearwater Audubon Monthly Meeting. Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Contact: 727-462-6024. Guest Speakers: Ann Paul and Ann Hodgson. Topic: American Oystercatchers in the Tampa Bay Estuary This talk will highlight the biology and behavior of a unique and charismatic shorebird, outlining its distribution range worldwide, the reasons why the species is facing population decline, and the conservation effort of biologists across the southeast US. We will also discuss the long-term research that Audubon of Florida's Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries Program has conducted on regional populations and local conservation efforts. A quarter of the state's American Oystercatchers reside in the Tampa Bay estuary. Come at 7pm to mix, mingle, and consider becoming a member of Clearwater Audubon Society and take advantage of its many programs and field trips!
10/3, Saturday, 8am - Moccasin Lake Nature Park Bird Watching Walk. Meet at Moccasin Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Contact: Madeleine Bohrer 727-518-6241. It is bird migration time again! Join Clearwater Audubon Society in this wonderful Clearwater Park to look for an incredible variety of songbirds, water birds, and raptors in this unique oak hammock. This is an easy 3/4 mile trail and ideal for beginning and advanced birders alike. There are two large ponds, a stream, and a nature center which houses turtles and injured birds. 10/10, Saturday, 8am - John Chesnut County Park Bird Watching Walk. Meet at John Chesnut Park, 2200 East Lake Road, Palm Harbor at shelter #6. Contact: Ellen Pfau 727-786-3718. Join Clearwater Audubon on this special bird watching trip to see resident and migratory songbirds, raptors and more in this freshwater wetlands habitat. This is an easy walk on packed trails and pavement. Experienced and beginning birders welcome! Everyone enjoys this unique park in northern Pinellas County. 1010, Saturday, 7:45am - North Anclote River Nature Park Bird Watching Walk Meet at Staples on the NW corner of Tarpon Avenue at Keystone Road. Contact: Merle Hubbard 727-939-1549. Join Clearwater Audubon to explore this quiet little known gem. We will look for migrant songbirds and raptors on a one mile shell, grass and boardwalk trail. Bring your binoculars and field guides if you have them!
10/17, Saturday, 10am - Big Birds for Beginners at Honeymoon Island State Park. Meet at the Honeymoon Island Nature Center. Contact: Lynn Sumerson 727-596-8822. Join Clearwater Audubon Society for a short lecture on bird watching then practice your skills in the varied habitats of Honeymoon Island. You will learn about and try to find woodpeckers, raptors, songbirds, water birds and more. We will cover up to three miles of shell and sand trails as well as drive to the Dunedin Causeway. Bring your binoculars if you have them. Cost: $4 per carload to enter the park
10/31, Saturday, 8am - Fort de Soto County Park Bird Watching Walk. Contact: Lynn Sumerson 727-596-8822. Meet at Tri-City Mall in front of Party City. Join Clearwater Audubon on a great bird watching trip to Fort de Soto. Did you know that this huge park has a tremendous variety of migratory songbirds, raptors, water and shore birds? It is full of natural beauty and surprises. This includes birding the causeway and shoreline drive in addition to walking about 2 miles on Tampa Bay's north shore. Bring your binoculars and field guides if you have them!
