Socially SpeakingOldest Members of 3 Score Softball Club Celebrate 90th, 91st Birthdaysby Sandi Fahy
The two oldest members of the 3 Score Softball Club celebrated their recent birthdays at the ballpark. Art Kelsey, who turned 91 on August 7, and Vic Ziffini, who marked his 90th birthday on July 28, were honored by their teammates following games at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater. Art is a pitcher, who takes to the mound three times each week. He is also a member of the Kids and Kubs softball team in St. Petersburg. Vic, a catcher who also plays outfield, is one of only four players to have been recognized as a lifetime member. In addition, he has served as equipment manager for many years. The 3 Score Softball Club was founded in 1969 by 13 men. Today there are some 160 members, including four women. To join, a prospective member must be 60 or over. Hence the name, 3 Score. As you may know, one definition of the word "score" is "a set of 20". Three sets would be 60. Participants come from all walks of life. Over the years, they have included former school teachers, principals, police officers, firefighters, accountants, plumbers, lawyers and investment brokers. Though most of the players reside in Pinellas County, some come from as far away as Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. Emphasis is on fun and fellowship and club members are divided into teams, which play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They also get together for a banquet each year.
