Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

Four more week-ends to enjoy the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center pool before they shut it down for the season. Even so, it's only open on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., but it's a good time to enjoy the exercise and visiting with your neighbors.

The Friends of the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center and Library is footing the bill for us to enjoy this extra time. And, by the way, the Friends meet the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Rec Center. We can always use new members and you are invited to join us, especially if you have some ideas for programs, or fund-raisers to help encourage use of the Center and Library. With the tourist season almost upon us, we need more volunteers at the Library also. It's a most satisfying way to make your days count for your community. Whether you can spare a day or a couple of hours, you will be appreciated. Stop by the library to volunteer there. Call Pat Power at 446-0929 to find out about being a member of Friends.

And, speaking of the library, you might want to drop by and take a look at the books on display that tell you just about everything you've ever wanted to know about gardening. There's one about gardening beside the seashore, another about plants that don't use up too much water, and, my favorite, Attracting Birds & Butterflies.

Also, you might want to start now to find yourself a young friend to escort you to the Halloween Carnival, planned for October 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Rec Center. You don't really need an escort, but it's just more fun to do it with a kid.
