GLEANINGS FROM THE SCRIPTURESIntelligent Design vs. EvolutionismThe Following article is written by Richard Elmhurst, Engineering graduate of Purdue University and retired from Honeywell Space Systems, Clearwater, Florida. In the 1960’s, Richard worked for IBM designing guidance systems for the NASA lunar mission. An intellectual revolution is occurring during the last forty years in the world of science on the subject of intelligent design (Creationism) versus Evolutionism. The astounding discoveries in the area of astronomy, the atom and complex information encoded within DNA have combined to transform the world of science. Professors E.J. Larson and L. Whitman, in an article of the April 3, 1997 science journal Nature, reported that a survey was conducted of 1000 top scientists. The survey found that 40% of the physicists, biologists and mathematicians surveyed acknowledged that they believe in God as a Supreme Being who is involved in our earthly affairs and hears our prayers. 1 Furthermore, scientists who are atheists are also questioning Darwin’s theory of natural selection (evolutionism). Dr. Francis Crick, an atheist and co-discovered of DNA, admitted that there is almost no possibility that life could have spontaneously generated from inorganic chemicals here on earth. Crick was forced to develop an alternative theory that suggested that life developed in some other galaxy and was somehow transported here on solar winds. Dr. Crick acknowledges that his theory has no evidence to support it. 2 A single human cell contains the coded blueprint for each person which would require 3000 volumes of 1000 pages each to print and yet the cell is so compact that if one cell from each person on earth were placed together it would require less space than a single aspirin. Charles Darwin himself admitted that the human eye was so complex that it could not have possibly evolved through natural selection (evolution). 3 The human eye is of no functional value unless it is fully formed. Dr. Stephen Hawking, although an agnostic, admitted that it is incomprehensible that the universe could every have formed by random chance. Hawking writes, “If the rate of expansion one second after the Big Bang had been smaller by one part in hundred thousand million million, the universe would have re-collapsed (due to the force of gravity) before it ever reached its present state.” 4 If the expansion rate was slightly more (1 part in 1018) galaxies and solar systems would have never formed. As schools “open the doors” and allow the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to evolution, the scientific discoveries in this century regarding the remarkable complexity of life and the universe point to intelligent design versus accidental, random process, stated plainly in Genesis 1, “In the beginning God created…”
