GFWC North Pinellas Woman's Club Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
GFWC North Pinellas Woman's Club members Laura Auth, Debbie Struk, Aphrodite Smith-Gillispie, Fran Falkenhayn and Jane J. Hussar. Since the founding of the GFWC North Pinellas Woman's Club in 2003, eight members have been diagnosed with breast cancer. They are all survivors. While their compassion to care for each other has been great, their support for others who face cancer has taken a variety of positive twists and turns. They have created 2,000 comfort pillows for men and women who have breast cancer surgery. It is a small, soft, washable pillow that is placed between the body and arm to relieve discomfort. It can also be used in the car to ease pressure of the seatbelt shoulder strap, or while sleeping. The comfort pillows are placed in cancer centers, doctor's offices and the club will even mail a pillow to someone when contacted. These volunteer women also have participated in walks that benefit breast cancer awareness programs. The club will have its second American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer benefit on November 14 at the Dunedin Country Club, 1050 Palm Blvd in Dunedin. Featured will be dinner, dancing, entertainment by acclaimed singer and entertainer Dominic and over 50 opportunity baskets. The 6-10 p.m. fundraising dinner is $30 per person and guests will choose from chicken marsala or herb encrusted grouper dinner. In March, Greg Snyder and Bonefish Grill in Safety Harbor helped raise $4,700 for breast cancer awareness. Opportunity baskets and auction items include:
