United States Postal Service - Proposed Post Office ClosingsAs the holiday gift shipping season approaches, I felt it timely to write this follow-up relevant to the recent press regarding the United States Postal Service and their plans to close some Post Office locations in our area. I happen to live in Clearwater Beach, so I have paid more attention to the news that our Downtown and Beach locations are candidates for the chopping block. I'm sure the stories have included many other locations in the Tampa Bay area. Each time a story is written about the potential closings, it becomes a hot topic of concern for many of the people I come across in the course of daily activities. It surprises me that the press doesn't mention some truly useful alternatives as part of their coverage of the situation. I happen to use a Contract Postal Unit on Island Estates and they are not at all part of the system that will close offices. I'm sure that you can find a Contract Postal Unit near where you live. Even if your local Post Office isn't planning to close, I think you will find that the people operating your local Contract Unit will be a great pleasure to work with. They are small business people that live and work in your neighborhoods. Like anyone running a small business, they tend to provide a superior level of attention and service. In summary, I hope that future articles that raise so much concern about our Post Offices will also give mention to these truly useful alternatives. - Anders Hamilton
