Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

Ah - It's New Year's resolutions time again. I wonder, does anyone even bother anymore? I don't do new year's resolutions! My resolutions usually follow a long "chat" with a child, or grandchild. I can't wait until the three great grandchildren start raising me. My daughter started getting me straightened out when she was about four-years-old. It's great fun, if you know not to take yourself too seriously.

But - New Year's resolutions often include something about exercising. I have a suggestion if yours do.

Keeping the resolution to exercise will probably last longer if you do it somewhere away from the temptations of books and TV and snacks and that big arm chair just made for snoozing. So, plan to do your exercising, among your peers, at an exciting place like the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center.

If you haven't yet tried the new games of Wii, wander on over on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Center staff will get you started on the less than energetic way to play tennis, bowl, or even - gasp - box. You don't exercise as much with Wii, but you probably do more than you otherwise would. And it's great fun! I have loved "swinging a tennis racket" again without having to chase balls.

Check the Recreation Center schedule to discover the other fun and interesting ways to exercise and enjoy yourself at the same time.

And speaking of fun, you might want to make a movie date with someone to join you on Monday, January 11, at 2:00 p.m. to see the free film scheduled at the Clearwater Beach Library. This month it is a movie called Evening, an emotional drama that focuses on secrets between mother, daughters, friends and family, released in 2007.

And have you heard that the bridge players are back? Social bridge is now available on Mondays, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Rec Center.

And may 2010 be your best year yet.
