Library Holds First Blood DrivePALM HARBOR - Did you know that 90% of the population will need donated blood in their lifetime? In fact, three gallons of blood are used each minute in the United States! To recognize National Blood Donor Month, the Palm Harbor Library will hold its first blood drive from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 16. A blood drive at the library? Why? At a volunteer's suggestion, the library contacted Florida Blood Services when the husbands (Andrew McCarthy and Roger Phillips) of two staff members died suddenly in November. They wanted some way to honor the employees, and this seemed the perfect way. Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. January, in particular, is a difficult month for blood centers. Why not stop by and donate? An actual blood donation takes only 7 to 10 minutes. If 1% more of all Americans gave blood, shortages for the foreseeable future would disappear.
