Recs and ReadsBy Anne McKay GarrisAt the tender age of 14 my parents dragged me out of my safe nest in Macon, Georgia where I knew everyone, and dropped me down in Clearwater, by way of Okalahoma City, thanks to Daddy's wartime transfers. Entering junior high nine weeks into the year was not fun, especially coming from a large school in Oklahoma where I knew no one, and no one wanted to know me. Here in Clearwater was a Civics teacher who lectured vigorously on the physical deterioration of American youth. He proposed a tennis tournament, to be held at the tennis courts still residing on Clearwater's Downtown Bay Front. Bolstered by a summer as the tennis partner of one of Oklahoma City's junior high tennis champions, I managed to make a name for myself on the tennis court and wound up with a great group of friends in a very short time. Which brings me to the suggestion that you, or your children, or grandchildren might possibly find your own social acceptance if you spend some time taking the tennis lessons available to you at our Clearwater Beach Recreation Center. At least you will learn a very pleasant and energetic game, and get some good exercise. Give them a call at (727) 462-6138 for the details. One good thing about tennis - you can "get up a game" with only one other person participating, although, I think four is more fun. At least you won't have to wait for a whole team as when you play soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc. While we're talking physical fitness, I'm pleased to report that we will, shortly, have a personal trainer available at the recreation center's fitness room whom can be hired, at a nominal fee, to work with you on the best way to exercise, eat, and otherwise conduct your life for maximum wellbeing. Ask about it at the recreation center. You know, of course, that visitors to our community are welcome to use both the library and the recreation center which are now located in the same building.
