Safety Harbor Garden Club Schedules ProgramCome join the Safety Harbor Garden Club for Dr. Craig Huegel's program "Rare Florida Native Plants." The meeting will be 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 17, at the Safety Harbor Library. The library is located ay 101 Second St N, Safety Harbor. When Hernando DeSoto landed in what is now Pinellas County, the forests and marshes were ablaze with flowers. He promptly named this new land "La Florida." Many of these original plants are still around - if you look for them, and they may look really good in your own garden. Dr. Craig Huegel will present a photographic look at some of Florida's rarest and most beautiful native plants and discuss why so many species here are listed as threatened or endangered. Dr. Huegel is a wildlife ecologist and author of numerous books and publications on native plants and wildlife. He is also a co-founder of the Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society. The meetings are free, and open to the public. For more information, call (727) 724-1525.
