GFWC Club Helps Meet the Needs of Area Non-Profit Organizations

CLEARWATER - The GFWC Clearwater Community Woman's Club grant committee, headed by Betsy Dort, waded through an avalanche of applications from area non-profit organizations who were hoping to gain needed funds due to the downfall in the economy. These organizations have seen huge decreases in funding and donations, while at the same time experiencing large increases in their clients needs.

At the club's 39th Daisy Luncheon and Fashion Show on Thursday, April 15, at the Belleair Country Club (1 Country Club Lane, Belleair). The 2010 CCWC Daisy Grants are being awarded to the following deserving organizations:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas Inc. - Funding will provide tickets for live theatrical productions to Big Brothers Big Sisters and their matches.
  • College Fund of Pinellas - This grant will be used to give scholarship assistance to area college students.
  • The Kimberly Home Inc. - Funds will help purchase new educational programs to be used with clients.
  • Lighthouse of Pinellas - These funds will be used to upgrade computer labs to meet current industry standards.
  • Pinellas County Historical Society - Will use their grant to refurbish the Heritage Village Interaction educational exhibits used by numerous school children and adult visitors to Heritage Village.

This year the GFWC Clearwater Community Woman's Club is really "Steppin' Out" with a new theme and venue for the 39th Annual Daisy Grants and Fashion Show. The new venue - The Belleair Country Club, offers guests to the event an added feature: valet parking. This setting will allow for a more intimate event, with an up close and personal contact with the models and fashions from Stein Mart. The featured entertainment will be Paul Wilborn, who is the executive director of the Palladium Theater at St. Petersburg College. Mr. Wilborn will entertain the attendees with vocals and piano, including the featured theme song "Steppin' Out."

A favorite part of Daisy Fashion Show has always been the many gift baskets, (worth hundreds of dollars), that are donated by club members and generous area merchants. These baskets contain gift certificates to area restaurants, golf courses, jewelry stores, and much more, and will be awarded to the winners of the raffle at the end of the show.

Proceeds raised at the event will go towards the club's Daisy Grant Fund.
