ISLAND ESTATES - The first annual Pink Power Walk in 2007 raised $5600 to help The Mary Kay Foundation fund research of cancers affecting women and programs related to the prevention of domestic violence. The following year's event brought in some $8600. In 2009, proceeds from registration fees, donations and sale of "Pink Power" T-shirts and other items totaled $9600. This year's goal is $10,000, event coordinator Betty Furniss advised earlier this week. Since the Mary Kay Foundation was founded in 1996, it has awarded nearly $22 million to shelters and programs addressing domestic violence and $13 million to cancer research, she said.

Registration is currently under way for this year's Pink Power Walk, which is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 17. All ages are welcome. Participants will meet at Tommy Duff's Irish Aviation Pub, 126 Island Way, and walk to the beach and back, a distance of approximately two miles.

A silent auction and drawing for a "Cruzin Cooler" and trailer ($850 value) and a pink bicycle signed by cancer survivors is scheduled at Tommy Duff's following the walk. A "Cruzin Cooler" Race is also on the agenda. Duff, a sponsor of the event, donated the bicycle for the fundraiser. Other area businesses have contributed items for the silent auction and promotional materials for the 300 goody bags which will be distributed that day.

Advance registration is $13. Fee is $15 the day of the event. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Orders are also being taken for "Pink Power" items at this time. Call Betty Furniss at (727) 447-4646.
