Pinellas County Tax Certificate Sale Scheduled

CLEARWATER - Pinellas County Tax Collector Diane Nelson announces the tax certificate sale for 2009 delinquent real estate taxes will be held June 1st from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at www.bidpinellas.com.

The annual tax certificate sale is an online auction that allows bidders the right to purchase a delinquent taxpayer's debt and ensures a majority of unpaid property taxes are collected and distributed to various taxing authorities. Last year's sale produced $80.5 million from the sale of 20,213 individual certificates.

Registration is currently open at www.bidpinellas.com and will continue until the sale ends on June 1st. Tax certificates will be awarded to bidders with the lowest bids, with ties awarded based on a computer-generated random selection. Pinellas County Tax Collector's Office will provide computers and limited assistance for registered bidders who want to participate in the sale but do not have Internet access.

All delinquent real estate accounts will be published in the Gulf Coast Business Review on May 21st and 28th. To avoid having a certificate issued, property owners with delinquent taxes can make their payment before the sale at any Pinellas County Tax Collector office or the Pinellas County Tax Collector website, www.taxcollect.com.

In-person payments must be made before 5:00 p.m. May 28th, and certified funds are required. Credit card payments at www.taxcollect.com, which are charged a 2.95-percent convenience fee, must be made by 5:00 p.m. on May 31st. Because May 31st is a holiday, technical support will not be available for customers who encounter payment-processing issues.
