Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

Don't forget the Dive In movie at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center Pool on Friday night, August 13, at 8:30 p.m. Bring your friends and join the fun. The movie is Surf's Up, a fun-loving romp at the beach, which the whole family will enjoy. Just in case you've missed it, the pool is located on Mandalay Avenue, beside the tennis courts and across from Mandalay Park, beside the Fire Station. Parking in the adjacent parking lot is free after 6:00 p.m.

During the week, in the afternoons, you are invited to browse the shelves of the Beach Library, located in the Recreation Center. Last week, I treated myself to one entitled The Aloha Quilt, by Jennifer Chiaverini. It's the story of a lady who goes to Hawaii to help an old friend set up a quilter's retreat in Hawaii. The story of her difficult divorce is intertwined with some interesting insight into the history, culture, and political difficulties of the Hawaiian Islands. Even as we sympathize with the heroine's efforts to cope with her ornery soon-to-be former husband, we watch her friendships grow with new friends in the islands.

The Aloha Quilt is part of the Elm Creek Quilts series of books by Ms. Chiaverini. It is only one of the enticing new books just waiting for you to scoop them up and have a lazy summer afternoon, enjoying a good book.

Don't forget that a nice young man is always at the Beach Library on Monday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. to help you learn new computer programs, or find out what's wrong with old ones.

See you at the "Dive-In."
