Meet (from left) Georgette Insalaco, Sue Powers and Fran Salgado, members of the Largo Police Department's Volunteers in Policing (VIP) squad. VIPs serve in various capacities. Patrol duties include vacation home watch, radar speed watch, package and person transport, impounding found bicycles, reporting roads and road signs in need of repair and assisting with event traffic safety. Volunteers in support positions provide clerical support in the records division, maintain fleet cruisers, teach 55 Alive classes, conduct Buckle Up campaigns, fingerprint children at events and serve as tour guides for the department. VIPs receive training at the VIP Academy, which consists of approximately 66 hours of classroom instruction, followed by field training with a seasoned VIP.
