Memorial Day ceremonies honored those who died for freedom
LARGO — World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran John Velchoff, 88, shown with wife Liz Bohl at left, and World War II Army Air Corps veteran Robert Smith, pictured with daughter Susie Kranstuber, attended the Memorial Day program at Heisler-Johnson American Legion Post 119 in Largo on May 26. Velchoff saw action in the Pacific Theater, Smith in the Tinian Islands. Cake was served later that day in honor of Smith’s 90th birthday. The former staff sergeant was born on Memorial Day, 1924. Each year the Largo post takes part in the Memorial Day ceremony in remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
